INFECTIOUS DISEASES: E. cuniculi, myxomatosis, RHD and parasites

چکیده
Encephalitozoon cuniculi Encephalitozoon cuniculi is a single-cell, microsporidial organism. Microsporidia are a diverse group of organisms and more than 1200 species have been identified. They parasitise a range of vertebrate and invertebrate hosts. Microsporidia lack mitochondria and rely on a host cell for energy. They produce large numbers of spores that contain a coiled polar tube. Classification of microsporidia within the animal kingdom has proved difficult. Many early papers describe microsporidia as protozoa but papers that are more recent classify them as atypical fungi. Chitin is present in the cell wall. There has been an upsurge of interest in microsporidia in recent years because several species can cause disease in humans, especially in people that are immunocompromised by HIV infection or anti-rejection drugs following organ transplantation. Medication to treat cancer can also be immunosuppressive. Encephalitozoon is only one genus of microsporidia and it contains several species, including Encephalitozoon cuniculi. The most common microsporidial infections in humans are due to Encephalitozoon bieneusi and Encephalitozoon intestinalis. Both species have been found worldwide, mainly in HIV-infected patients with chronic diarrhoea but also in immunocompetent persons with acute, self-limited diarrhoea. Disease due to Encephalitozoon cuniculi and Encephalitozoon hellem are rare but have been diagnosed in humans.

Timing and severity of immunizing diseases in rabbits is controlled by seasonal matching of host and pathogen dynamics.
Infectious diseases can exert a strong influence on the dynamics of host populations, but it remains unclear why such disease-mediated control only occurs under particular environmental conditions. We used 16 years of detailed field data on invasive European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) in Australia, linked to individual-based stochastic models and Bayesian approximations, to test whether (i...
متن کاملNovel bivalent vectored vaccine for control of myxomatosis and rabbit haemorrhagic disease.
A novel, recombinant myxoma virus-rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV) vaccine has been developed for the prevention of myxomatosis and rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD). A number of laboratory studies are described illustrating the safety and efficacy of the vaccine following subcutaneous administration in laboratory rabbits from four weeks of age onwards. In these studies, both vaccinated...
متن کاملSpore-forming microsporidian encephalitozoon: current understanding of infection and prevention in Japan.
Microsporidia are spore-forming obligate intracellular parasites. They are known to cause opportunistic infections in humans through zoonotic, waterborne and foodborne transmission routes. This article reviews the present knowledge regarding microsporidian Encephalitozoon cuniculi infections in animals living in the human environment in Japan and discusses the basic measures required for the ef...
متن کاملVaccination Success and Body Condition in the European Wild Rabbit: Applications for Conservation Strategies
The European wild rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) is the main prey for several endangered species and an important game species in the Iberian Peninsula. However, over the last several decades 2 diseases, myxomatosis and rabbit hemorrhagic disease (RHD), have contributed to a decline in rabbit populations. In Spain, vaccination campaigns against both diseases and the translocation of vaccinated ...
متن کاملImmunologic and molecular characteristics of Encephalitozoon-like microsporidia isolated from humans and rabbits indicate that Encephalitozoon cuniculi is a zoonotic parasite.
To assess the zoonotic potential of Encephalitozoon-like microsporidia, we isolated and cultivated spores from specimens of urine, respiratory secretions, and stool from six patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus and from nine rabbits. Because spores of Encephalitozoon-like species are indistinguishable by microscopy, we characterized the isolates by western blot analysis and by re...
